It is with great sadness I post this email from Terry "MotoTerry" Ayers, Austin PGR RC.
Many of us have known for a while that Alton has been fighting cancer for a long time. We knew he was in the hospital, but expected him home soon and were making plans to visit him there. We've seen him through several rounds of chemo, always praying for full remission.
Alton stayed on the bright side all the time, even when he was hurting. He constantly apologized for not being able to make mission or for having to make them in his truck.
Not to be. He had a heart as big as Texas, we've lost a Great Man.
GodSpeed Alton, thank you for letting me know you.
Brothers and Sisters ot the Patriot Guard,
It is with my deepest regret that I inform you of the passing of Alton "Grizzlebear"Young.
Alton passed away at home this morning with his wife Vicki at his side.
Funeral services are pending at Beck Funeral Home in Cedar Park. Vicki has asked that the Patriot Guard be present at the service. I have contacted Sam Warren and he will be posting information as it becomes available.
Alton did not have military service but there was no truer patriot among the ranks of the PGR than Alton Young. His dedication to the PGR and the mission to honor the men and women who served our country either buy choice or induction, during war or peace, has earned Alton a place among those to be honored by the PGR.
I only recently learned that Alton's Father, who is 94 years old is a retired pastor of the First Baptist Church in Wimberley and a WW II Veteran twice awarded the Purple Heart. I understand he was a Pilot with many other honors and awards. He was with Vicki this afternoon so I'm praying he will be well and at his son's service so I can personally thank him for both Alton and for his service to our nation.
With a heavy heart,
Terry

I regret that I did not know him well. But, I remember standing with him last July 4th. He spoke of his illness, but was upbeat and cheerful, none the less.

I spoke with him a few times at missions. He seemed to be a gentle giant and fun to talk with. God bless him and his family.

Alton was a distinguished and eloquent gentleman with whom it was always a pleasure to associate. We often spoke at missions and his words were always encouraging. It was indeed a pleasure to have associated with such a brilliant linguist.

This was a difficult mission for us. The rain would not quit and the roads were treacherous, but seeing how many came to honor Alton was very touching. The family was exceptionally gracious and grateful for our presence and many stopped along the flagline to talk with members about Alton and to thank us for being there.
Great Job Juan!

From Austin's PGR Website:

I received this letter tonight from Alton's wife Vicki. It's intended for all to read.
Moto T.
Terry,
I apologize for the delay in sending this note, but please express my personal appreciation and respect for those in the Patriot Guard who braved the weather to pay tribute to Alton. I was deeply touched to see your members standing at attention as I walked into the funeral home and again as we drove so many miles to gather at the cemetery. So many of my friends and family shared the same emotions as I experienced as we witnessed the respect your group shows to someone such as my husband.
Alton felt a tremendous pride when he was able to join your group on a ride. I only wish he could have joined your membership sooner in life. Thank you for allowing him the privilege of serving as a fellow Patriot Guard Rider. The PGR was one of the highlights of his life.
Thank you again, and may God bless you all and keep you safe as you continue to ride.
Sincerely,
Vicki Young
