Dotson served in the US Navy on active duty from August of 1942 until February of 1946. During this time, he was stationed at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station as an aircraft radio lab repairman, repairing radios for aircraft. Later in life, he affectionately stated that he had repaired radios for George H W Bush's aircraft, which was also stationed at Corpus Christi during the same period. Upon discharge from the active Navy, Dotson then served in the Navy Reserves as an Airman Apprentice (V-6) until his discharge on 20 January 1953.
